MySpace: The Pimp

pimp myspaceMarketing Pilgrim points to reports that MySpace will start contextual advertising shortly.

Their platform, they can do what they want with it. Obviously, they’ve been running advertising campaigns for a long time anyway.

I just don’t understand why users don’t recognize that they are providing free content for these platforms, with no opportunity to share in the monetization. Well, ok, the average MySpace user can’t spell "Ad" if you spot them the "A", so a comprehension of internet marketing and monetization strategies is probably too much to ask.

These are partnerships - MySpace provides the platform, users provide the content. Except MySpace keeps all the money and severely restricts any attempt by users to create revenue streams of their own

Sounds like a Pimp to me.

Hey, if MySpace is the pimp and the advertisers are the Johns, what does that make the users?

I keed, I keed!

Seriously, I don’t understand why anyone would put forth any effort developing content for platforms that don’t share the wealth. It isn’t a user-friendly platform - Wordpress and Blogger are much easier to customize, and you don’t have all kinds of flashing banner ads unless you want them. You don’t have contextual advertising unless you want it. And with Blogger, you can pretty much say and do what you please with your site as far as monetization goes, and reap the rewards. With Wordpress-hosting there’s restrictions, but self-hosted using WP as the software, it’s the users call.
