Ok, maybe that doesn’t make sense to a lot of you, but in market research, the non-parenthetical portion of that title was a mantra when dealing with new markets. Oftentimes, we’d start a market analysis only to find we had no idea what the true nature of the market was, and we’d have to reset our project and expectations. We understood the phenomenon, and planned accordingly.

But, it also was how I was feeling going into BlogOrlando on Friday.

I was worried about keeping up with some of the discussions, but found my knowledge of the business and technologies of the blogosphere is on par with most of the participants. So that was good. I started studying SEO and other associated practices and technologies in earnest about 8 months ago, after several years of practicing informally with my early blogs. Since the google-jury is still out, it remains to be seen if I will ever have any results to show for it. But, I didn’t hear anything Friday that I hadn’t already heard or read elsewhere, so I came away feeling much more confident about the direction my various blogs are heading.

That’s not to diminish the efforts of the folks at BlogOrlando, a completely unique experience for me in that all of the presenters were paying their own way. It speaks to the respect Josh receives that these folks would spend that kind of money to come down and share their expertise. Just making the point that I didn’t know what I knew - it seems I’m strong "enough" for a lay-person in SEO. I know I have a ton to learn about social media, and if I had it to do again knowing what I know now, I’d have spent more time in those sessions.

I wish I could have attended the pre- and post- social gatherings, because it’s kind of tough to make connections with people during 90 seconds of chat-time between sessions. I met John from Finding America, where he has a ton of videos from a trip around America he and his significant other made earlier this year. It appears he’s from Florida, so I have another unique Florida blogger to add to the blogroll over at Florida Sun Dog. I also met VCDan between sessions and we had a nice conversation, and he asked about Fab and I let him know Fab was just a big old teddy bear. Some of his videos would have you thinking otherwise.

Finally, the conference did end on a sour note for me, but I’d rather not air that publicly. Josh and the folks at BlogOrlando did a bang-up job on the un-conference, and I recommend you attend the next one.
